The objective of this research was to understand the narratives of middle-aged women about intimate partner violence (IPV). From the examination of police inquiries, we selected would-be participants who had experienced IPV and who were 45 years of age or older. With the ten women who agreed to participate, semi-structured interviews were carried out. The content was analyzed in cycles, using the ATLAS.ti 7 software. From this analysis, the participants’ relationship history was identified and nineteen subcategories were defined, which gave rise to four categories: (i) reasons for remaining in the first relationship with IPV; (ii) reasons for ending the first relationship with IPV; (iii) reasons for remaining in the others relationships with IPV; and (iv) reasons for ending the others relationships with IPV. It is expected to help professionals from different areas to broaden their understanding of the subject and to intervene assertively in cases of IPV.
